چکیده

Using the HST Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS), we have obtained high S/N echelle observations of the weak interstellar N I 1160,1161 absorption doublet toward the stars Cas, Ori, Ori, Ori, Sco and Sco. In combination with a previous GHRS measurement of N I toward Oph, these new observations yield a mean interstellar gas-phase nitrogen abundance (per 10 H atoms) of 10 N/H = 75 4 ( 1 ). There are no statistically signi cant variations in the measured N abundances from sightline to sightline and no evidence of density-dependent nitrogen depletion from the gas phase. Since N is not expected to be depleted much into dust grains in these di use sightlines, its gas-phase abundance should re ect the total interstellar abundance. Consequently, the GHRS observations imply that the abundance of interstellar nitrogen (gas plus grains) in the local Milky Way is about 80% of the solar system value of 10 N/H = 93 16. Although this interstellar abundance de cit is somewhat less than that recently found for oxygen and krypton with GHRS, the solar N abundance and the N I oscillator strengths are too uncertain to de nitively rule out either a solar ISM N abundance or a 2/3 solar ISM N abundance similar to that of O and Kr. Elemental nitrogen partitioning in dense interstellar clouds.

Many chemical models of dense interstellar clouds predict that the majority of gas-phase elemental nitrogen should be present as N(2), with an abundance approximately five orders of magnitude less than that of hydrogen. As a homonuclear diatomic molecule, N(2) is difficult to detect spectroscopically through infrared or millimeter-wavelength transitions. Therefore, its abundance is often inferr...

VARIATIONS IN THE PEAK POSITION OF THE 6.2 m INTERSTELLAR EMISSION FEATURE: A TRACER OF N IN THE INTERSTELLAR POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBON POPULATION

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the molecular characteristics that underlie the observed peak position and profile of the nominal 6.2 m interstellar emission band generally attributed to the CC stretching vibrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). It begins with a summary of recent experimental and theoretical studies of the spectroscopic properties of large (...

Potential Variations in the Interstellar N I Abundance

We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph observations of the weak interstellar N I λ1160 doublet toward 17 high-density sightlines [N(Htot) ≥ 10 21 cm]. When combined with published data, our results reveal variations in the fractional N I abundance showing a systematic deficiency at large N(Htot). At the FUSE resolution (∼ 20 km s) the e...

Efficient surface formation route of interstellar hydroxylamine through NO hydrogenation. I. The submonolayer regime on interstellar relevant substrates.

Dust grains in the interstellar medium are known to serve as the first chemical laboratory where the rich inventory of interstellar molecules are synthesized. Here we present a study of the formation of hydroxylamine--NH(2)OH--via the non-energetic route NO + H (D) on crystalline H(2)O and amorphous silicate under conditions relevant to interstellar dense clouds. Formation of nitrous oxide (N(2...

A unified model of interstellar dust

We have simultaneously modeled both the interstellar extinction and polarization (both linear and circular) on the basis of a trimodal dust model: large silicate core-organic refractory mantle dust particles; very small carbonaceous particles responsible for the hump extinction; and PAH’s responsible for the FUV extinction. The core-mantle particles which are the exclusive contributor to the in...
